Breeding patterns in an Australian arid-zone landbird community

چکیده
In 1990–1994, over nine survey periods, we recorded a total of 684 breeding attempts deriving from 51 species in landbird community arid north-western New South Wales. We investigated whether effort was related to regular seasonal patterns (spring vs winter) or irregular fluctuations rainfall (pre-drought drought isolated thunderstorm above-average post-drought). The and number the study area were not correlated with numbers individuals present at given time. overall influenced primarily by season but modified rainfall. Spring predominated timing magnitude efforts different movement groups (residents, nomads migrants) dietary varied. Within these groups, there inconsistencies between individual species. Residents bred mainly spring only low during drought. Some resident relatively stable food supplies also bred, though lesser extent, winter. did respond breaking prolonged aseasonal breeding. appeared follow more closely. greatest nesting occurred after broke, possibly because peak availability foods suitable for this uncertainty extremes arid-zone environment are now being exacerbated ongoing anthropogenic climate change, which is likely severely impact birds.

Inexplicable Inefficiency of Avian Molt? Insights from an Opportunistically Breeding Arid-Zone Species, Lichenostomus penicillatus
The majority of bird species studied to date have molt schedules that are not concurrent with other energy demanding life history stages, an outcome assumed to arise from energetic trade-offs. Empirical studies reveal that molt is one of the most energetically demanding and perplexingly inefficient growth processes measured. Furthermore, small birds, which have the highest mass-specific basal m...
متن کاملLiterature in the Arid Zone
This chapter surveys and assesses from an ecocentric perspective some representative literary portrayals of the Australian deserts. Generally, it contrasts works that portray the desert as an alien, hostile, and undifferentiated void with works that recognise and value the biological particularities of specific desert places. It explores the literature of three dominant cultural orientations to...
متن کاملWater Balance and Urine Production in the Australian Arid-zone Crab Holthuisana
The permeability to tritiated water (hourly exchange fraction = 0-164) and the rate of urine flow (0-47% body weight/day) are lower than recorded in other freshwater decapods. The calculated net osmotic water flux (2-71 % body weight/day) is 5 times the water output in the urine, indicating that there is extrarenal excretion of water. Water balance is maintained in the absence of urine producti...
متن کاملPalaeoclimate change drove diversification among isolated mountain refugia in the Australian arid zone.
Refugia featured prominently in shaping evolutionary trajectories during repeated cycles of glaciation in the Quaternary, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere instead experienced cycles of severe aridification but little is known about the temporal presence and role of refugia for arid-adapted biota. Isolated mountain ranges located in the Australian arid zone likely...
متن کاملBirth of a biome: insights into the assembly and maintenance of the Australian arid zone biota.
The integration of phylogenetics, phylogeography and palaeoenvironmental studies is providing major insights into the historical forces that have shaped the Earth's biomes. Yet our present view is biased towards arctic and temperate/tropical forest regions, with very little focus on the extensive arid regions of the planet. The Australian arid zone is one of the largest desert landform systems ...
